Russia stretches from Eastern Europe across northern Asia and is the largest country in the world by area. Russian is the main language, written in the Cyrillic alphabet. The Ural Mountains divide it broadly into a European part in the west and an Asian part in the east. Because of its vast size, its climate varies widely, with cold regions extending across the north. Its ballet, literature and Orthodox church architecture are widely known.
